FAQ — Wotton & Co

Some of the questions we get asked most often. If you don't find what you're looking for, get in touch — we're happy to have a chat.

Working with us

You'll deal directly with Adam Wotton — the owner — every time. There are no junior staff or handoffs. That means you get continuity, and someone who actually knows your situation.

Just get in touch via the contact page or give us a call. We'll have a brief conversation to understand what you need, and if we're a good fit we'll send through an engagement letter and get you set up in our client portal.

We keep our client numbers deliberately small so we can provide a high level of service. We do take on new clients, though availability can be limited during peak tax season (July–October). Contact us and we'll let you know current availability.

Not at all. Most of our clients work with us entirely online. We use a secure client portal for document sharing and can meet via phone or video call. If you're local and prefer to meet in person, that works too — we're based in Glenelg South.

Fees & pricing

We work on fixed fees, agreed upfront before any work begins. You'll always know what you're paying — no surprise invoices. Our fee schedule shows indicative starting prices; your final fee is confirmed in writing before we start.

Yes — all prices shown on our fee schedule are GST-inclusive.

The main factors are complexity, the number of entities involved, and the condition of your records. If your books are well-maintained and information comes through promptly, fees stay at the lower end. Prior year backlogs or incomplete records can increase the time required.

Tax returns

If you lodge through a tax agent (like us), you generally have until 15 May the following year — well beyond the 31 October self-lodgement deadline. Exact dates depend on your circumstances and lodgement history. We'll keep you informed of your specific deadlines.

We'll send you a checklist through the client portal. Generally this includes your payment summaries or income statements, bank interest, dividend statements, rental income and expenses, and any records of assets bought or sold during the year. We'll guide you through it step by step.

Yes. We can lodge overdue returns for prior years and help get you back on track with the ATO. It's better to come forward voluntarily — penalties are generally reduced when you do. Get in touch and we'll assess what's needed.

Business clients

Yes — getting your structure right from day one matters. We can advise on whether a sole trader, company, or trust structure suits your situation, and handle all the registrations including ABN, TFN, GST, and company or trust establishment.

Yes — we're Xero-certified advisors and it's our preferred platform for business clients. If you're not yet on Xero, we can help with the setup and migration. We also work with MYOB and other platforms where needed.

We don't believe in the once-a-year tax time relationship. For business clients especially, staying in touch throughout the year means better decisions, fewer surprises, and tax planning that actually works. We're available when you need us — not just at lodgement time.

SMSF

An SMSF gives you control over your super investments but comes with real responsibilities. It's generally suited to people with a meaningful super balance (typically $200,000+) who are willing to be actively involved. We can walk you through the pros, cons, and costs before you commit to anything.

Our SMSF setup fee covers legal documentation, accounting assistance, ATO registration, and ASIC corporate trustee setup — bundled into one fixed price. We handle the process end to end so you don't have to coordinate multiple providers.

Each year your SMSF needs to lodge a return with the ATO and have its financial statements independently audited. We prepare the financials and tax return, and coordinate the audit with an approved SMSF auditor. We'll let you know what records we need and keep you across any compliance requirements.
